All American Homes Plants Certified to Build ENERGY STAR® Ready Homes
Elkhart, Ind.—Bringing Green Mainstream™ is much more than a tagline for All American Group™—it’s a way of life. “By the end of this year every All American Homes plant should be certified to build ENERGY STAR® ready homes,” stated All American Homes President, Rick Bedell. “Our organization is dedicated to taking the confusion out of saving energy, and make it easy for consumers. Having our construction facilities ENERGY STAR ready lets the public know that we are serious about this and it instills confidence in our process and the quality of our homes.”
Of the five All American Group plants, the Colorado and Virginia plants are already ENERGY STAR certified. The Iowa plant is expected to receive certification this month and the Indiana facility in late December. ENERGY STAR Certification is no simple task. It takes intense inspections in the facility to verify the tightness of the home, proper installation of insulation and air barriers, and evaluation of individual components such as windows, doors, appliances and lighting. With this certification, All American is now able to incorporate most of the ENERGY STAR requirements directly in the factory, and then provide the builder with a list of items to be completed on site. Conformance with the ENERGY STAR requirements in the field is then verified by a third party rater.
Professional Engineer and Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Rater, Peter Lee, P.E., of T.R. Arnold & Associates, Inc. recently rated an All American Group home in Columbia City, Indiana. “This home scored a HERS index of 59,” stated Lee. “This means that this home scored 41 percent better than the 2004 IECC standard. That’s the best HERS index I’ve ever recorded,” he concluded. The HERS index is a scoring system established by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) in which a home built to the specifications of the HERS Reference Home (based on the 2004 International Energy Conservation Code) scores a HERS Index of 100. The lower a home’s HERS Index, the more energy efficient it is in comparison to the HERS Reference Home. The HERS Index is used to qualify a home for ENERGY STAR certification.
All American Group’s commitment to building green is further evidenced by the Smart Home on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, the Living Zero Energy Tour home currently touring the nation under the direction of the United States Department of Energy, and the recent completion of the near net zero energy homes for the Paradigm Project for the Boulder County Housing Authority in Colorado. Every home in the All American Group collection is available with an Energy Savers Package that can save homebuyers up to 50 percent on their energy bills. In addition to these achievements, All American has built well over 1 million square feet of LEED Silver buildings for the United States Army.
